Day 24 – A picture of something you wish you could change

“For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.” Romans 12:4-5 (NIV)

I love the idea of  “team.” A simplified definition states team is a  “cooperative unit.” There is so much a team can do that an individual can not. In almost every circumstance, having people work together for a common goal produces a better result.

I know it’s not always easy to be part of a team. Someone must lead, which invariably means others must follow. And that can be a hard pill to swallow, especially if your team is blessed with multiple leaders, right? But when that team gets to doing what they are meant to do, with every person working their specific piece, oh, the beauty of it!

In Romans, Paul talks about the body of Christ working together. We each have specific roles to play as part of that body, just like we would on any team. In simple, Children’s Pastor speak,  “A body can’t have a bunch of noses, because then who would do the seeing?”  And that’s the crux of the problem I wish I could change.

So many people look at what is being done inside and out of the church as being something that they don’t need to be a part of. “Inside” meaning certain ministries the church plans to provide to its congregation, and  “out of” pertaining to the outreach ministries to the community and beyond.

Now, how I see it, there are two main problems. First, there are too many noses. The body can’t function the way it needs to if there are too many noses and not enough other body parts. And second, there are not enough of any of the parts to actually do the things that need to be done.

I have to say, it’s disheartening when someone comes to me before, during or after a church service to tell me something they think I missed doing during the service. Yet, they are usually not willing to take that task on for themselves. I think a lot of people feel that since I am paid to work for the church that I should bear the whole load. But, people, I’m still only one person! And as that one person, I am only able to do the part I’m supposed to do!

So much could happen if only every part of the body were doing its job. How can we get to where we need to go without the feet? And how can we serve without the hands? And how can we hear the need without the ears? Please make this change! Join the team and be a part of the body of Christ so we can all accomplish the task laid out for us all!

Awesome post Marla, very right on, we all have our part, both in the church and the body of Christ.
